From snapshots of Japanese oddities, festivals and daily life, to motorbike touring, backpacking and camping. A travel diary for friends and family, but hopefully with a minimum of navel-gazing. Still no waffles.

Hahaha - that is both deeply disturbing and very funny at the same time. Is there much animal-loving in Japan, in a pet sense, or is there less of a trend towards anthropomorphism? Well, except in their scary/funny advertisements. ;)
There's a really weird mix: The anthropomorphism ever-present in their advertising and cartoons; the obsessive coddling of some select pets; the widely-held desire to eat anything and everything that has ever moved on this earth, and every part at that; and a complete lack of awareness about the Western obsession with animal welfare.
The whole concoction is totally alien to most foreigners...
Reminded me of that Simpsons episode about vegetarianism; seem to remember a pig asking to be eaten or something like that. Speaking of the Simpsons, have you ever had blowfish? That sounds a bit glitzy; Jonathan Ross was talking about the parents of some famous director (or maybe it was an actor) whose parents are the best blowfish cooks around. They apparently treated him to an 8 course (something like that) meals, ALL blowfish based, from blowfish soup to blowfish testicles.
Although I seem to remember you're a veggie, so probably not. :p
That's the one part of all this that bugs me - it's not possible to remain vegetarian here without putting a lot of people out of joint and virtually always preparing my own food.
I lasted almost a month before deciding to give it up for the duration of my stay in Hakodate...
Ah, I see - so, well up for the blowfish, then? :p
I think the risk of death would put me off, even if they WERE the best blowfish cooks ever. Then again, I guess its quite expensive, as it seems to be something requiring a great deal of skill?
That is too funny.
