Wow! That looks awesome! Just as I was enjoying the cutesy Studio Ghibli season on FilmFour too; never seen Nausicaa before, and that was fantastic (looks to be a template for Princess Mononoke too), Laputa being fairly cool too. Looking forward to getting them in sub rather than dub (though Patrick Stewart at Lord Yupa was pretty cool voice talent)

All of Hayao Miyazaki's films are great, though I can't comment on the dubs. Sadly the same cannot be said of Doraemon.

Japanese tend to credit Laputa, Nausicaa, Tottoro or Kiki's Delivery Service as their favourites, Western folks usually opt for Spirited Away, Mononoke, Nausicaa or The Crimson Pig.

I love them all, with Spirited Away edging first place (probably as it's the first I ever saw, and the most dreamlike).

What is Doraemon, exactly? Yet another cutesy anime/manga involving lots of squeaks and grunts? I've read its very popular - how come?

I've not seen Kiki yet (thats showing on Monday), but from what I've seen so far, Nausicaa is definitely my favourite. Mononoke and Spirited Away were good too - been a while since I've seen Mononoke, but I don't think its quite up to Nausicaa.

Totoro is far too cutesy, I don't like children, and there was too much of the mundane - however, it did interest me as a possible precursor to Spirited Away (little girls, supernatural goings on). Porco Rosso was ok, but didn't have as much of the feminist overtones (there was that bit in the factory where everything, from design to construction, was done by women, which was good) I really enjoyed in Nausicaa (such a great female character! Strong, intelligent, compassionate, even able to crack heads). In fact, I should start a Ghibli thread on HH, as the anime one doesn't seem to have taken off.

Have you seen that new Earthsea one by Miyazaki's son? I'm told it failed to convey the book properly (something about them all being white), but that it was a successful directorial debut despite doubts over the first-timer's ability.

Doraemon = kid's stuff. Useless kid helped out by his robot pal from the future with fun gadgets. Not good.

Tottoro is great, don't knock it! Much better than Kiki, which I guess you also won't like. You should watch Grave of the Fireflies and see if your mundane and children dislikes still stand... it's all mundane, it's all about kids and it's pure genius.

Not sure where your feminist enthusiasm comes from, it's kind of irrelevant to me...

I really liked the Earthsea books as a kid, they are one of the classic 'why the fuck are you ranting about Harry Potter?' examples to draw on, so I'm none too keen on a film adaptation, especially after the average Howl's Moving Castle. Will probably get around to watching it eventually though.
