I have fond memories of dozing in the sun at the sloping piazza in Siena, and the place is still much as it was then, if a little larger than I remembered. The signs saying 'no sleeping' and 'no eating' might be new though, but no-one was paying them any attention.
There was a football match on the day we arrived, and it seemed the whole town was out to cheer on the local team. We joined the ticket-less spectators trying to peer over the trees and netting for a short while on our way to the castle. The castle itself turned out to be a military site and not somewhere we wander around.
The impressively tall clock-tower is rather expensive to climb, but well worth it. Walls metres thick at the base narrow to a hand span near the top. The narrow stairwell and old clockwork add to the charm and the views from the top are the payoff.
