From snapshots of Japanese oddities, festivals and daily life, to motorbike touring, backpacking and camping. A travel diary for friends and family, but hopefully with a minimum of navel-gazing. Still no waffles.

Love it. Did you ever download any of "Nathan Barley" that was on TV last year? The shirt is almost a quote off it :)
That makes me wonder about the countless shirts I've got with Japanese characters all over them. I have checked a few times with Japanese speakers, and it generally seems to be something pretty innocuous, like '1,2,3', or just bizarre; one apparently was along the lines of 'medical sushi' or something like that.
Still, at least I can be relatively sure my tattoo isn't anything overly stupid. Its supposed to say 'true friend' (well, 'true', 'loyal', 'honest' - the usual multiplicity of meanings), which was confirmed by a random Chinese lady who saw me in a swimming pool not long after I got it back at Warwick. I also found that when I was getting off a sleeper train in Xian, my backpack had caused my shirt sleeve to roll up and reveal the 'friend' character. This prompted some fellow passengers to smile at me in a pleasantly welcoming fashion, so I'm hoping thats because it really does say 'friend' rather than 'drooling retard, please treat gently' or something along those lines...
Iain: Nathan Barley? Nope, any good?
Can: Yeah, don't you remember us taking the piss out of you for declaring to the world that your left arm/hand was your best friend? Has somewhat onanistic overtones, no? =P
